Grade 7 Up—Information about mental illness is interspersed with first-person narratives, including the story of Szabo's own bipolar disorder, from a "rock bottom" experience to diagnosis, treatment, struggle, and his eventual ability not only to live with his condition, but also to thrive. The book discusses the symptoms of common disorders, resistance to seeking help, the role of friends and family, understanding and maintaining oneself, and more. It makes the point that mental disease does not define a person. It does what it sets out to do, which is to illuminate mental disorders and offer hope and encouragement.—Robin Henry, Griffin Middle School, Frisco, TX

Certain to become one of the most comprehensive accounts of the mental health issues affecting today's youth, popular speaker Ross Szabo's guide helps young people to address their problems, and aids adults in understanding them as well.
From the Publisher
An emotional, compelling look inside the mental health issues of today's youth.
Diagnosed bipolar at 16, author/speaker Ross Szabo learned firsthand about the painful experiences of mental disorders. After many attempts to get help, Ross finally found treatment and became determined to help the millions of young people who suffer from some type of mental health issue.
Mental health problems have reached epidemic proportions. Suicide is a leading cause of death among college and high school students, and many do not discuss or seek help for their problems, which may include depression, anxiety, ADHD, eating disorders and more. Stigma is the largest barrier to getting help.
Behind Happy Faces examines this stigma and provides young people the tools to address their problems and move forward. Based on his dynamic high school and college presentations, Szabo uses anecdotes, real-life examples, statistics, and rapidly moving narrative to reach young people facing these complex issues.
Certain to become one of the most accessible and comprehensive accounts of the psychological and emotional factors affecting our youth, Behind Happy Faces also aids parents, teachers and administrators in gaining a better understanding of these issues as well.
